Sydney Spring Fat Tyre Festival

Race Updates

.04th Nov 2008.

Thanks to everyone who entered the 2nd Annual Sydney Spring Fat Tyre Festival we promise to make it just as fun as last year.  Sorry to those who did not get an entry in this year’s race.  We will be working with Forests NSW and the local club to expand the track and the parking so that we can have more people out at future races.

If you really, really, really want to race...send an email to chris@wannaride.com.au and we will see if there are any cancellations and we can squeeze you in.

.26th Oct 2008.

Hello Racers!!!  Ok so four weeks to go to the big day.  We’ve been out doing a few days of track work with the guys from the local club, and the track is in epic condition right now.  They had a very successful 6 hour race last weekend and the new berms in the Roller Coaster should get well beded in for the 8 π hour race.  We have a few bits of info for everyone as well:

1)     There are officially 113 entries left until the race is full.  So if you know anyone who is thinking about coming out and riding, please let them know that we expect these spots to fill pretty quickly.  In future races we may expand the track to accommodate more riders, but for now we think 450 is perfect for having a super fun event.

2)     Wannaride had a couple ideas coming into this year’s event.  One, we wanted to donate money from our profits to a good cause.  And two, we really wanted to encourage more women to get out there and have a go at riding the race.  Recently, a couple of our friends have had major medical issues with their children, and I saw first hand how tough it can be on a family and especially a mum.  Being a new dad myself, my little one is a total joy, and I would never want to see her sick.  However, there is a great team at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead that works tirelessly everyday to make sure that kids get the best care possible when sick.  So we came up with idea that Wannaride will donate $1 for every lap ridden by every female rider in the event to the hospital.  This way it will motivate the girls out there to go a bit harder knowing that they are helping a good organization that could one day help them and their kids.  If anyone else individually or as a company wants to match our donation or even just give a donation at the race, we more than welcome you to jump in and help.  We will have donation forms out at the event, and remember that anything over $2 is tax deductable.   Any company or individual that matches our donation will get free entry into next year’s event as well.  Please email chris@wannaride.com.au for more info.

3)     The crew from SRAM and RockShox has jumped on board to help with bike maintenance at the race.  Drop by and see Trent at the SRAM tent if you have any issues with your SRAM shifters, derailleurs or Rock Shox fork.  He’ll get you back on the course and doing some hot laps.

4)     We rode the course on the weekend and have decided to run a slightly shorter version of the track than last year.  The official race course will be 10.27 km long, but don’t worry we only took out a climb, and who really wants to ride up hill anyway.

5)     Parking at the event:  Due to limited space to set up marquees and tents around the transition area, we will again be asking everyone to park along Red Hill Rd both above and below transition, but there will be no parking at the event epicentre.  Last year worked fine and there was plenty of parking along the fire road and down at the parking lot closer toward the entrance to Red Hill Rd.  The race course will also be run the same as last year, so you can put tents and marquees at the lower parking area and still cheer on your riders or support a solo rider as they come by.  Please keep an eye out for our friendly volunteers in the Wannaride t-shirts, they will help direct you to a spot to park your car.  But please be nice to them, we reserve the right to make you do a nude lap if you’re grumping about getting to the race late and having to park 300 meters away from transition.

6)     Not much else really at this point.  We hope everyone is taking advantage of all these warm sunny days and getting some training in.  Thanks to everyone who entered so far and we really look forward to having you out there at the race.  If you can’t make it this year, no worries, the local club just signed a 5 year lease with Forest NSW, so it looks like the track will only get better and better and the race better and better as well.

.17th Sept 2008.

Wow! Entries are filling up much faster than we thought. Please let anyone you know that may be interested in racing that we are definitely cutting off entries at 450 riders (maybe 500 if we can get some more girls racing). This is so the track stays fast and clear and everyone has as much fun as possible!

Also, the local club will be having a 6 hour club race on October 19th if you want to get some practice in and support the local crew that maintains the course.
