The Course
The Ourimbah State Forest course is 12 kilometres of Sydney’s best single track. Or should we say the best 12 kilometres of Sydney’s singletrack? Everyone from first timer to elite rider will have fun on a course that caters for all. Just ask around, it really is one of the most rocking courses that NSW has to offer. There has been alot of work done recently and some new bits of track have been added, it's better than ever. Thanks to Central Coast Ourimbah MTB Club for all the hard work!
The race will start with a steep 400 meter climb up the fire road (just to get those lungs pumping...) before ducking into the forest for the start of a killer singletrack loop!
Riders will wind their way downhill through some steep but smooth singletrack until they come to the famous (or infamous) roll in called “The Drop” (don’t worry there will be a B line around this section, but it’s actually easier than it looks, so give it a go). Just keep an eye out for the Yeti Cycles Balloon Arch, then point and shoot.
Next comes “Jurassic Park”. Dark, jungly, wet, smooth, buff and fun, this section of singletrack offers immense amounts of grip and once you get the flow of the corners and short descents it’s an ancient roller coaster ride. A small bridge crossing and a bit more winding singletrack and it's time for a bit of a climb...
From here you’ll be spat out onto the 4wd track that heads up a short and tough climb to the top of the hill near the DH course. But you’re rewarded for your efforts - the sweet bit of singletrack that meets you at the top is called “Burnt Forest”. This singletrack winds its way through some new growth forest for a couple of kilometres until you come to one of the best bits of the course – the “Roller Coaster”.
As its name implies, this trail is fast, flowing and seems to go on forever. If you’ve ridden “The Snake” at Mogo, or “Coaster” in Taupo, you’ll know what we mean! It's a blast!!
Just hang on and enjoy the ride. As fast as you can if you’re into that sort of thing, or flow it if you want to rest up for the next climb. Either way, you’ll get to the bottom of this section with a smile from ear to ear.
At the bottom, the course winds it way through some very tight fast singletrack. Between some big boulders, left at a big tree, then two more rights, then over a creek, right at another tree… are you lost yet?
Just as you think it’s almost over, the toughest little pinch climb of the course jumps out of nowhere! Rooty, rocky, and a real thigh burner. Singlespeeders be warned!
Now you are on the home stretch with just a few more fast flowing sections until the course finishes with a trip through “The Graveyard”. Try to keep your speed through this tight, winding, bermed, insanely grippy trail and you finally pop out near all of the tents. Just a short winding climb back to transition and you're done. Tag your team mate or go out and smash another fast lap...It’s dead cool!
This time, straight back into the singletrack! We’ve limited the big fire road climb to the start lap, so you get more singletrack on Australia’s “8 ¼ Hours of Power”. That’s what it’s all about.
